What are Oldschool Clue Scrolls?

Clue scrolls, who doesn't know them and who doesn't love them? It's treasure hunting at its finest using an ancient looking scroll that gives you random clues. The rewards can be enormous or very disappointing, but that makes it fun for a lot of players because you never know what you're going to get. Clue scrolls can be obtained randomly in a lot of ways, you can obtain them by killing monsters, playing minigames, looting implings, fishing, woodcutting or mining, so plenty of ways to get yourself a scroll!

Now where do they come from? About 14 years ago on the 5th of May 2004 Jagex released an update: they added clue scrolls to the game and added 25% more bank space for players. Since then a lot of Runescape players are still trying out their luck when doing these treasure trails.

There are 5 levels of clue scrolls: easy, medium, hard, elite and finally the 5th level: the master clue scroll. The higher the level, the harder it gets but fortunately the rewards will be a lot better. Low level clue scrolls are the easiest to get, although you're still looking at approximately a minimum of 1/50 drop chance. Medium clue scrolls are a bit more challenging to obtain and solve. When you obtain a hard clue scroll you have a challenge, they're longer and harder than the easy and medium clue scrolls. Sometimes you even need to complete a set of quests before being able to complete the clue. The elite clue scroll requires you to have a specific amount of quests depending on the clue and a good set of skills. There's even a possibility of running into a Bandosian Guard or Armadylian Guard. Finally, the master clue scrolls are only obtainable by trading every clue scroll level to the NPC Watson, so you'll have to spend some time collecting all of the clue scrolls first.

Now the fun part: the rewards, hence the reason why you're doing these treasure trails. There are tons of rewards you can get from clue scrolls, for example trimmed armor is an iconic reward you can get on completion of a clue scroll. They're valued around a couple hundred thousand to millions of coins. The trimmed armor isn't better than regular armor but it's all cosmetic, still fun though! Although most of the players are not hoping to get a shiny set of trimmed armor but rather hope for the big rewards like 3rd age. With a lot of luck you can get 3rd age armor from an elite and master clue scroll. The price of 3rd age armor ranges from 5 million to 65 million a piece! Definitely worth a shot you'd think, but if that's not enough: you can get 3rd age weapons and a 3rd age cloak from clue scrolls too. These are the most expensive items you can get in the game, ranging from a couple of hundred million coins to one billion!

Clue scrolls are interesting, fun, sometimes frustrating but always exciting. You could spend hours of grinding and hunting treasure, ending up with a couple of grand, but maybe it's your lucky day and you'll end up with the most expensive item in Runescape... who knows!
